Galleries are invited to participate in the main section of the fair – branded gallery HUB – by the selection committee. Criteria for the Central section are in line with international standards of art fairs worldwide and are set in order to align the fair and its galleries with international discourse and to ensure the responsible patronage of artists.

The 2023 Gallery Lab is curated by Kim Kandan (Gallery Liaison, FNB Art Joburg) and Aida Esi Hayfron-Benjamin (independent curator – Ghana). More details on criteria are available on our Exhibitors page.

  • Joost Bosland, Stevenson (Cape Town, Johannesburg)
  • Gina Molle, Everard Read (Johannesburg, Cape Town)
  • Marcus Gora, First Floor Gallery Harare (Harare, Zimbabwe)

More details on invitation criteria and each section are available on our Exhibitors page.

The Fair’s mandate is to support and grow a sustainable art ecosystem in Africa for its artists. We believe the best way to do so is to work with galleries that support them through long term representation. This means the Fair gallery focused, inviting only galleries to the Fair who in turn select the artists they will exhibit in their booths. For more information on the fair sections and invitation criteria visit our Exhibitors page.
In 2019 the fair was purchased by Mandla Sibeko making it 100% black owned.

Event details

The Anglo American art and object collection is a combination of art collected over several decades through four different companies: Anglo American, de Beers Group, Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.

The collection comprises of 3600 works, with around 1000 pieces in the collection on display at the newly commissioned Rosebank offices. Although vast, the collection experienced an acquisition hiatus from the early 2000s until 2021 creating a significant gap in the collection’s representation of contemporary art. The collection now has a dedicated curator, Megan Scott, tasked with its cataloguing and digitisation, opening an exciting new chapter which will see the gradual procurement of significant works that reflect our contemporary South African and African art world.
