International Women’s Month Series: Zandile Tshabalala
Share
A collaboration between the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), FNB Art Joburg and Open City, CONSTRUCT is a video-based series profiling femme artists with practices based in Johannesburg. Under the theme Reflections of Self, the second season sees artists interrogating ways that their personal lives show up in their practices.
In this week’s episode we hear from Zandile Tshabalala. Referring to her paintings as soft confrontations, Tshabalala’s work invites its audience to consider the ways they perceive Black women. Placing emphasis on emotion, painterly qualities and colour, instead of realistic representations of existing scenes, Tshabalala’s style lends itself to post-impressionism and what could be a contemporary take on fauvism.
