gallery HUB
gallery HUB is the core section of the fair showcasing contemporary galleries. Invitation criteria is in line with international standards of art fairs worldwide and is set to align the fair and its galleries with international dialogues and to ensure the responsible patronage of artists. FNB Art Joburg evaluates potential gallery HUB exhibitors based on an essential and secondary round of criteria, as follows:
Essential Criteria
All of which must be met for a gallery to be considered in the gallery HUB section.
- Representation of artists. In order to quality, galleries need to represent artists.
- Physical gallery space. The applicant needs to have a physical space in which they show artists and have exhibitions.
- Exhibitions. Galleries must present a regular exhibition schedule.
- Primary business is a contemporary art gallery. Those in consideration for gallery HUB must primarily be in the business of selling art.
Secondary Criteria
Once galleries have passed the essential criteria they are evaluated and ranked according to substantive criteria that are aimed at evaluating the professional practices and overall activities.
- Exhibition Programme. A gallery’s exhibition programme is evaluated on the type of exhibitions, curatorial strength of exhibitions and if the artists and themes of the exhibitions reflect the cultural breadth of the context in-which it functions.
- Artists represented. The roster of each gallery will be considered for the strength, level of institutional representation and the sociopolitical relevance of the artist.
- Publishing and writing. Considered galleries should support and participate in the publishing of researched material which makes an academic or art-historical contribution to artistic discourse.
- Art fairs. A gallery’s art fair participation is reviewed – looking at which fairs they may also participate in.
- Gallery outreach. Does the gallery show the potential to function beyond a local context by virtue of the quality and strength of their programme? Is work being done by the gallery of broader significance or will it always function within a local environment?
- Best practice. Considered galleries must in principle endorse and follow industry standards in the matter it functions both curatorially and commercially.

MAX
MAX is dedicated to artworks that use scale and/or medium in a way that makes them difficult or impossible to present in a regular art fair booth. Each large booth in the gallery HUB presents a single work in MAX.
gallery LAB
The first of its kind worldwide, Gallery Lab showcases galleries and hybrid spaces from around the continent and beyond. Each participant showcases a single artist or artist collective. Gallery Lab will serve as an incubator, a space to develop and nurture emerging galleries and programs as well as a space for exploration; to present and test new artists, ideas and business models relevant to the contemporary African arts landscape.
The section is curated by Kim Kandan (Gallery Liaison, FNB Art Joburg) and Aida Esi Hayfron-Benjamin (independent curator – Ghana) on an invitation basis.
While invitation criteria is less stringent than the Central section of the fair,
they include:
- Conceptually rigorous exhibition programme of at least four exhibitions a year
- Demonstrated continuity and growth of the space
- The use of a physical space (no online platforms)

Spanning talks, screenings, public lectures and audio essays, the AUX section, sponsored by ITOO ArtInsure, brings industry leaders to the public to explore a plethora of topics impacting the contemporary art world. Beyond, but centred around the three-day fair, FNB Art Joburg remains committed to audience and collector development through an educational platform and immersive programming respectively known as ArtJoburg.com, the BMW Young Collectors Co. and Open City.
