Frances Goodman is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose prolific career spans over twenty five years. Her use of quotidian materials of the beauty and fashion industrial complex — sequins, acrylic nails, and false eyelashes, amongst others — draws attention to the ways that possibilities of female identity are narrowed, constrained and experienced through the prism of consumption, aspiration, desire and anxiety, whilst also celebrating their use as tools of empowerment and a means of forging identity. Her humorous, wry and disquieting works play at the intersection of surface glamour and delight and the underlying anxiety that this commodification of beauty and its reflective values creates.
