Thonton Kabeya’s exhibition Introspect at Wits Art Museum offers an engaging immersion into the artist’s world through his multimedia artworks that combine images of the artist’s lived reality with glimpses of his inner world. Created over the decade that DRC-born Kabeya has lived in Johannesburg, the large, highly textured paintings and assemblages depict dense urban scenes of people, pavements and high-rise buildings, while smaller paintings of couples dancing and children paying provide more intimate presentations of day-to-day life. Powerful, dark images of figures and faces ground the exhibition that together presents the richness of being human, and African specifically.
